Where Tourists Come From?

(2018-2023)

How Main Source Markets Change Over Time?

Singapore remained the leading source of visitors throughout the years, followed by Indonesia and China. Visitor numbers and rankings shifted sharply in 2020–2021, with Thailand briefly taking the top position as overall arrivals dropped significantly.

2022 onward, numbers recovered quickly after travel restrictions eased, with Singapore and Indonesia regaining their dominant positions by 2023.

How Tourists Enter Malaysia?

Land transport is the dominant mode of entry for international tourists, led by the Johor–Singapore crossings at Tambak Johor (BSI) and Gelang Patah (KSAB), which handle the majority of arrivals. Air travel ranks second, mainly through KLIA and KLIA2, while sea and rail account for smaller shares.

How Tourists Spend in Malaysia?

Shopping makes up the largest share of tourist spending (around one-third), followed by accommodation and transport.

During 2022-2021, overall spending collapsed, especially on shopping and leisure, with accommodation and transport temporarily taking the lead. From 2022 onward, expenditure rebounded, and the pre-pandemic spending pattern returned.

Distribution of Tourists to Parks in Malaysia

While marine and island parks attract the majority of international visitors, inland national parks and wildlife sanctuaries also draw eco-tourists seeking nature and wildlife experiences.

Tunku Abdul Rahman Park in Sabah consistently ranks as the top destination, attracting visitors with its stunning islands, clear waters, diverse marine life, and snorkeling and island-hopping activities.
